So, there I was....
Don't you hate it when a story starts like that? You just know it's gonna end badly!
I was just out for a short ride today; about 80 miles or so. And wouldn't you know it, about 2 miles from home, an adolescent deer bound onto the road right in front of me. With (almost) no time to react, I leaned on the brakes. With a cager coming opposite direction, there was no place left to go anyway, and with the deer headed right to left, I'm lucky the cager didn't swerve into me to avoid it.
Drumroll...... My front tire clipped the deer's hind legs, and I rolled on unscathed. I looked into the left mirror, and the deer was still running. The lady in the car had eyes the size of tennis balls.
All's well on the homefront; as close as I ever want to get!

The ride may be fun, but in the Great Scheme of things, it really is about the destination! John 3:16

Because of events like this [and I've encountered quite a few of em over the years, ] I now use Animal [deer] Alerts on all my vehicles.A lot of people will laugh and tell ya that they don't work.Well, nothing is etched in stone, but since they're inexpensive and easy to install, I'll take any and every advantage I can get [especially when on two wheels] to avoid contact with these critters, and for obvious reasons!! And so far,so good as I've had quite a few deer,as well as other animal encounters, since installing em and so far they all got out of the way. But,ya have to be going atleast 35 mph in order to create the sound they emit so they can be heard by these critters.

Like chicken soup to a dead man, it sure can't hurt to have them, I guess.
I was doing 40-45 initially, about 30 when we met. I'm pretty sure the deer's leg(s) must've broke with almost half a ton impacting at that speed.
It probably didn't run very far.

Over the years,I have encountered just about every critter that lives in the New England area, but only made actual contact with one [lucky I guess considering all the close calls I've had] which was early [3AM] one November morning while traveling thru a heavy fog on my way home from work.My speed was approximately 15 mph,[due to that thick heavy fog] and I don't think the deer could see me anymore then I could see it.The good news was, neither one of us were injured ,the deer walked away, and there was no damage to the bike, other then a large brown spot on my seat!!

Guys,

Here in SE Kansas most a third of the accicents are deer related, so we keep a eye out for the critters. Dave, a lot of us use the electronic deer alert, its called a Trailblazer brand. It cycles up and down in frequency and I feel they work well. Certainly use it during the rut. Hell, I can't shoot them all!

ride safe

I got a simple solution to your critter problem where you live. All ya gotta do is mount a gun turret on the front of your scooter and blast away as they appear in front of ya!!!

How these deer [animal] alerts work is,they omit a high pitch frequency which we can't hear, but they can,the faster you go,the louder or higher pitch the frequency is,and the idea is to spoke em so they get out of your way.Remember when you were a kid riding your bicycle, and the neighbors' dog would come out and chase ya as you were driving by, trying to bit the wheel??Well the reason they chased ya is because the spokes on the wheels made a high pitched sound,or frequency, which they heard, but didn't like.So out they came after ya,usually tryin to bite the wheel or tire, and if they couldn't bite that, your leg was next in line. The same with the automobile driving by and the dog would go after the tire cause it too created a noise or frequency that we ,as humans, can not hear, but they can.

The deer alerts also work on this principle ,but create a higher pitch frequency because of their design, and supposedly, will spoke the animals enough to stop em from crossing in front of you ,or atleast, scare em off the street so ya don't make contact with em.But ya have be traveling at 35 mph or better for this to happen, the faster you're traveling, the louder or higher the pitch is,hence the better they work. And there is a left and right ,so ya wanna install em correctly [per the instructions] or they won't work right,if at all.[They come with instructions on how and where to install em.]

I've been using em for years now on all my bikes ,as well as my four wheelers and so far,so good. And ,for the money, [I wanna say 6 or 7 bucks a pair and I have extras in case I lose one as they're only attached via double sided tape] whada have to lose.If they work just one time, then they've paid for themselves. As for the critters I've encountered over the years, they include, deer, bears, moose, cats, turkeys, skunks, wood chucks, squirrels, rabbits, and just about anything else with four or two legs. And it ain't like you're spending a million dollars!! And for the price, I'll take any advantage I can get ,especially when drivin on two wheels. Dave!!!

Not sure that I need them in addition to my little girl shriek as that deer darter in front of me... Maybe I needed to do the shriek sooner.

Down here in the "deep south" the deer are the size of a Jack Russell terrier so no problem.

Back in the day, but after Dave and the
Dinosaurs I would cut up deer for the extra cash.
Any deer over 200lbs with it's massive shoulders was considered huge as it's nose dragged the ground riding on the tree hook. I never saw a 400lb beast, wouldn't want to cut it up either

I use this deer "deterrent": Link , mounted on the side of my radiator cover. Picked it because it's cheap and audible.

Deer are able to hear into the ultrasonic range but their hearing is most sensitive in the 4-8kHz range, close to our hearing (2-5kHz). High-pitched sounds don't travel as far as low pitched sounds and will generally be swamped by engine and tire noise or blocked by obstacles, so the higher the pitch the less effective it will be in reaching the deer. Ever hear the head-splitting sounds of a nearby car with subwoofers? You only hear the bass from where you're sitting; the higher frequencies don't punch through the environment.

Pretty sure that anyone who hasn't hit a deer is just some combination of lucky and careful.

The only difference I see between the unit you show verses the pair that I use is, yours are combined into one unit, where the ones I use are two separate units, one mounted on each side of the front of the vehicle!! And I suspect that both, the one you use and the ones I use produce the same frequency, the faster you go,the louder the frequency is so "hopefully" these critters will hear it some distance BEFORE ya get to em and get out of the way!!

Guys,

I was talking about the Trailblazer Deer Alert for our bikes. This is electronic. Too slow a speed and the old whistles won't work or get a bug in it, it quits. The Trailblazer has a switch if you want it off during the day or whatever. The Frequency cycles up and down, so they hear it one way or another. Most of us won't hear it on the highway and just shut it off when you get home. Hopes this helps.

Don't think for a moment that daytime is safe from deer.
True, they are more prevalent at dusk/night but it was mid afternoon when my incident happened.

This past Sunday night,I had my first deer encounter of this fall season.I was traveling on a dark, unlit, wooded back road, but, only traveling at 30 mph, and came over a little rise, and there he/she/it was, standing right smack dab in the middle of the road lookin at me.[I'd guessimate its' weight to be around 200lbs] I stopped about 10 feet from it and we had alittle starring contest to see who was gonna make the first move. When it didn't move,I actually spoke to the deer and said, well, whaya gonna do look at me or move. After about ten seconds,it finally turned and casually took its' sweet ass time walking back into the woods where it came from.

Then about 5 minutes later, while still traveling on that same road,Mr. Fox ran right across the street in front of me,but again, because I was going slow,no contact was made.

Now I do have Deer/Animal Alerts,[on ALL MY VEHICLES] but ya have to be traveling at a pretty good clip for them to emit a loud enough sound to spoke these critters so they'll get out of the way.But since it was a pretty nice evening,I was just be boppin along enjoying the evening instead of blasting thru there like I usually do,which my Deer Alerts would have put out a nice loud sound, which inturn, will usually spoke these critters so they'll move, hence no contact is made.

I know a lot of guys laugh when I mention deer/animal alerts, and I know nothing is etched in stone,BUT AGAIN,I'll take any advantage I can to prevent contact with these critters, especially at night!!

Last year in October 3 in the afternoon I was riding 35 mph in a 25 zone. Off to my 10 o'clock position I kicked up two deer at a residents home.
One took off and out of site. The other was running towards me at an angle were we could collide. This is all in about 5 seconds. He got so close that I could have hit him with a stick. This crazy bastard would have knock me off the bike, I tapped the front brake and he passed me. Thought for sure I was going to hit it's hindquarters
